Shionogi &Co., Ltd acquired Sciele Pharma Inc. (Atlanta, GA, USA) at a total purchase price of $1.4 billion. Upon completion of acquisition, Sciele will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shionogi and will continue operations as a standalone business unit. The acquisition of Sciele is the major acquisition by Shionogi in the recent years and will allow Shionogi direct access to the US market.            
         

Otsuka Pharmaceutical gained co-development right for ACU-4429, a drug for treatment of dry age related macular degeneration from Acucela (Bothell, Washington, USA) for USA in addition to exclusive rights for Japan and other countries in Asia. Otsuka will pay $5 million initially and up to an additional $258 million in milestone payments. ACU-4429 is expected to become the first drug for dry AMD which is 90% of the market in US.
